Nutrition
HOPE was invited to build up a new network concerning a major determinant of health, nutrition, in the framework of European Nutrition for Health Alliance and to draw out an action plan for 2005-2006 to guide the actions of the Alliance.
Today, malnutrition is not given the place it deserves on national or European policy agendas. Nutrition strategy has all too often concentrated on dealing with the problem of over-nutrition (i.e. obesity) which is indeed very important; however, the equally important problem of malnutrition has been largely neglected.
It is against this background that a group of stakeholders from across the health arena have formed the European Nutrition for Health Alliance (ENHA) in a united effort to raise awareness of the importance and the urgency of the issue of malnutrition and to build an agenda for action at the European level.
The goal of the Alliance is to be a veritable alliance of stakeholders from multiple sectors and areas of interest that are joined together in a common objective: to raise awareness of the importance of proper nutrition and reduce the incidence and consequences of malnutrition across the population, in the community and across all settings of care.
ENHA does not solely focus its activities on changing political priorities. Aiming further than this, the Alliance is dedicated to implementing change across Europe. In order to achieve this, ENHA strives to serve as a bridge across professional and sectoral divides and to unite and support physicians and other health care professionals, hospitals, healthcare managers, health insurers, industry, advocacy institutions, and policy-makers in the fight against malnutrition.
Several conferences have been organized, the first one being in London in 2005. In 2007, a scientific conference was example organized by the Belgian Food and Health Plan (BFHP) with the aim to identify concrete and necessary actions for implementation. It is estimated that in Europe 40 to 80 % of residents in care homes are at risk of under-nutrition, even the availability of food. Immobility, dependency on others, physical and mental regression, social isolation and financial limitations are the main factors that contribute. Another major conference was organized by the Czech presidency in June 2009.
