Health Promoting Hospitals The Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH) network produces evidence to help hospitals achieve their health mission and to support cooperation and exchanges of experience between participating hospitals. Health promotion is considered a core quality dimension of hospital services as well as patient safety and clinical effectiveness. Against the rising incidence of chronic diseases, the provision of health promotion services is an important factor for sustained health, quality of life and efficiency. The network also addresses the health of staff and the link of the hospital to its community. It has the following objectives:
- To change the culture of hospital care towards interdisciplinary working, transparent decision-making and with active involvement of patients and partners.
- To evaluate health promotion activities in the health care setting and build an evidence-base in this area.
- To incorporate standards and indicators for health promotion in existing quality management systems at hospital and at national levels.

Hersonisson, Crete (GR), May 6-8, 2009 The 2009 conference took place in Crete (Greece) from 6 May till 8 May. The discussing topics were the followings: the ageing of populations, the increase of chronic diseases, the trends towards increasing mobility, the expectations of patients and users. The discussions about quality and effectiveness of health services have increasingly focused on the need for better continuity of care and cooperation between health service providers and across country borders. From a health promotion perspective, such integration contributes to better health gain of patients, staff and communities as it is an important precondition for incorporating health promotion quality criteria into routine services as well as to offer specific additional health promotion services across the healthcare chain. Against this background, the HPH conference 2009 gathered representatives of all health professions and all types of health services, as well as of health policy and science, to share views on and to discuss the following specific issues:
- Health care without walls – a vision for health promotion in health care?
- Integrated health promoting healthcare for different target groups
- How to organize health promoting cooperation between different healthcare providers?
- Political, legal and economic preconditions for health promoting health care without walls.
